Colonel D. Peter Helmlinger
COL Pete Helmlinger assumed command of Europe District, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) on 12 July 2011. Headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, the district provides premier engineering, construction, stability operations, and environmental management products and services for the Army, Air Force, other U.S. government agencies and foreign governments throughout the U.S. EUCOM and AFRICOM areas of responsibility.
COL Helmlinger was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point in 1988.
He recently served as Assistant Director in the Directorate of Civil Works, Headquarters, USACE in Washington, DC; and as Commander of the 14th Engineer Battalion (Rugged!) at Fort Lewis, Washington. He led the 14th Engineers during a 15 month deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) 08-09, where the unit conducted IED route clearance, construction, and Iraqi Army training. He previously deployed to OIF I and OIF 05-07 as a Battalion S-3 and a Brigade XO.
His other assignments include service as Brigade XO, 555th Combat Support Brigade (Maneuver Enhancement) at Fort Lewis; Battalion S-3 and XO, 54th Engineer Battalion (Corps) (Mechanized) in Bamberg, Germany; Brigade XO, 130th Engineer Brigade in Hanau, Germany; Project Engineer, Far East Engineer District at Camp Casey, Korea; Engineer Operations Officer, I (US) Corps at Fort Lewis; Company C Commander, 14th Engineer Battalion (Corps) (Wheeled) at Fort Lewis; S-1, 14th Engineer Battalion at Fort Ord, California; Aide-de-Camp, US Army Engineer Division Pacific Ocean at Fort Shafter, Hawaii; and Platoon Leader in the 65th Engineer Battalion, 25th Infantry Division (Light) at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
COL Helmlinger’s military schooling includes the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), Command and General Staff College, Combined Arms Services Staff School, and Engineer Officer Advanced and Basic Courses.
His civilian education includes a M.S. in Civil Engineering from Stanford University, a M.S. in National Resource Strategy from ICAF, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from West Point. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Virginia.
His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 OLC), Army Superior Unit Award, Iraq Campaign Medal, Combat Action Badge, Ranger Tab, Sapper Tab, Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, and the German Armed Forces Efficiency Badge (Gold). He is a recipient of the Army Engineer Association Bronze de Fluery Medal.
