    USACE construction in Baltics enhances U.S., NATO capabilities and supports regional security

    Over the past several years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has delivered various projects in Estonia and neighboring Baltic countries Latvia and Lithuania through the European Deterrence Initiative where military infrastructure is built to enhance the U.S. deterrence posture, increase the readiness and responsiveness of U.S. forces in Europe, support the collective defense and security of NATO allies, and bolster the security and capacity of U.S. allies and partners.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers construction in Poland reassures allies and supports regional security

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District’s Northern Europe Area Office in Poznan, Poland has been the focal point for the Corps of Engineers’ more than $350 million construction mission in Poznan and many other sites throughout Poland over the past several years. These projects are already benefiting both U.S. forces stationed in Poland on a rotational basis as well as the Polish hosts operating the bases.

    Engineer Soldier makes waves on Navy base

    REDZIKOWO, Poland — Maj. Katie Werback held her breath. She was seconds from jumping into 39 degree water, for fun. Like most Sundays, she led a reluctant but excited group into the frigid Baltic Sea. As a Soldier assigned to a U.S. Navy base approximately 15 miles from the water, she couldn’t resist the chance to join a local polar plunge club during her time here. Despite her enthusiasm for the water, it’s more common to find Werback in construction boots than a swimsuit. She’s part of the Europe District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team managing the second Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense project in Europe.     US military construction set to ramp up in Poland

    SLUPSK, Poland – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers anticipates breaking ground on another Aegis Ashore complex by next summer as attention turns toward Phase III of the European Phased Adaptive Approach to ballistic missile defense at Redzikowo Air Base.

  • US, Romania complete construction on missile defense complex

    U.S. and Romanian officials inaugurated the new Aegis Ashore Phase II radar site and missile battery Dec. 18 during a ceremony in Bucharest, declaring it “technically capable.” U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District has worked closely with the Missile Defense Agency, U.S. Navy and Romanian officials to finish the $170 million missile defense complex and meet a presidential mandate for operational capacity by the end of 2015.

    USACE bolsters European reassurance effort

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District will manage more construction in Eastern and Central Europe this year than it has in the past 40 years combined. Over the next three years, the district will execute up to 145 military construction and facilities sustainment, restoration and modernization projects in Poland, the Baltics and Balkans as part of the $1 billion European Reassurance Initiative to support NATO allies and U.S. partners in the region.

    SHAPE community celebrates opening of US schools

    MONS, Belgium – Top military and civilian leaders from Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, the Department of Defense Education Activity and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially dedicated the U.S. sections Monday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at SHAPE International School. The new Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe elementary and middle schools – to be followed by an American high school this coming winter – are the first to open as part of a multinational-funded venture to build a state-of-the-art campus on this NATO base by the fall of 2019.

  • US, Romania begin work on missile defense complex

    DEVESELU AIR BASE, Romania – Top U.S., Romanian and NATO officials broke ground Oct. 28 on a new ballistic missile defense facility being built to boost regional stability and strengthen the alliance’s collective security stance. The high-profile ceremony signaled the start of construction for the Aegis Ashore complex, the second of three stages in the European Phased Adaptive Approach to ballistic missile defense.

    MONS, Belgium – Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe is inching closer to unveiling brand new elementary, middle and high schools here. Progress continues on the three American facilities at this NATO base, which is home to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe.

    Taking SHAPE: USACE projects key to organization’s future

    MONS, Belgium – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is managing a major push into upgrading decades-old buildings on the NATO base here as part of an endeavor that will have a lasting impact on the culture and mission of Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, military and education leaders say. The centerpiece is a multinational-funded, $146 million construction project at SHAPE International School, the largest under way within USACE Europe District.

NATO special operations forces, comprised of 26 member nations and 3 non-NATO partners, completed a new, state-of-the-art 23,000-square-foot administrative headquarters building. The USACE-managed $19 million project was completed in 23 months through a partnership with the joint venture contractors Bilfinger-Berger and Besix. During construction, 116 local subcontractors and suppliers were involved and local building materials were utilized. The facility meets strict environmental and energy savings standards and is U.S. Green Buildings Council LEED Silver certifiable.

    USACE delivers NATO Special Operations Headquarters in Belgium

    MONS, Belgium -- U.S. and international military officials have cut the ribbon on a state-of-the-art facility constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District that will enable the NATO special operations forces community to plan, coordinate and conduct vital missions around the globe.
