    TIRANA, Albania – Albania’s telemedicine network is completely integrated and functional following a large-scale effort by U.S. and Albanian partners to overhaul a dozen facilities around this small country in southeastern Europe. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District, in partnership with U.S. Embassy Tirana’s Office of Defense Cooperation and U.S. Agency for International Development, managed renovation of 12 telemedicine centers over five years in a $1.9 million venture funded through EUCOM’s humanitarian-assistance program.

    Illness leads to unexpected friendship for office engineer in Romania

    Sandy Higgins, a member of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District’s Romania Missile Defense Agency Resident Office working on the Aegis Ashore project at Naval Support Facility Deveselu, came down with a severe bout of pneumonia this past spring. The long recovery took her into the home of a Romanian husband-and-wife doctor team, who nursed her back to health. A strong personal bond emerged.

    Project manager provides boost to charter baseball club

    WIESBADEN, Germany – An engineer who oversees military construction for a living is pitching in to help build a local youth baseball association – from the ground up. Stephen Swint, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District project manager, just wrapped up his first stint as an assistant coach with the Wiesbaden Red Barons Baseball Club, a startup program for American and German players.

    Students share STEM ambitions with USACE

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District personnel hosted the STEM Essay Contest winners from Wiesbaden and Sembach middle schools Thursday at the Amelia Earhart Center in Wiesbaden, Germany. The first-place winners from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades participated in a day of hands-on activities, presentations, a mock ribbon-cutting ceremony and construction-site scavenger hunt.
  • USACE bolsters European reassurance effort

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District will manage more construction in Eastern and Central Europe this year than it has in the past 40 years combined. Over the next three years, the district will execute up to 145 military construction and facilities sustainment, restoration and modernization projects in Poland, the Baltics and Balkans as part of the $1 billion European Reassurance Initiative to support NATO allies and U.S. partners in the region.

    Europe District engineer team returns as Liberia is Ebola-free

    WIESBADEN, Germany – The remaining military members on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team sent to Liberia for Operation United Assistance made it back to Germany earlier this month, just as the West African nation was declared Ebola-free. The Europe District contingent assisted with treatment center construction and helped sustain a DOD presence that numbered 2,800 personnel at its peak.

    WIESBADEN, Germany – Top engineers have begun outlining the steps they’ll take in two major programs to bolster allies while streamlining U.S. forces and assets in Europe over the next several years. Discussions about the European Reassurance Initiative and European Infrastructure Consolidation came during the 2015 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District Partner Workshop.

    WIESBADEN, Germany – More than ever before, the U.S. and its allies throughout Europe, Africa and Israel called upon Europe District in 2014 for architect, engineering, construction, environmental, and operations and maintenance support. USACE had record-high quality construction placement in excess of $610 million across the district in all programs ranging from Belgium to Israel, the Baltics to the Balkans, Eastern Europe to Africa, and at remote sites on both continents and Eurasia.

    After turning over the last of 10 Ebola treatment centers in January, U.S. military task force members have begun withdrawing from West Africa as new cases of the disease tail off to virtually zero in Liberia.     Breaking barriers: Army opens first-of-its-kind ACP in Germany

    Representatives from U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, U.S Army Europe, Installation Management Command-Europe, the German armed forces and ministries of construction and finance, URS Deutschland, Hermanns and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District officially opened the $6.3 million ACP with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 28.
  • Last 2 Ebola treatment units completed

    U.S. and international agencies carrying out Operation United Assistance have wrapped up work on the final two of 10 Ebola treatment units in Liberia, a top engineer with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) said Jan. 23. Europe District’s Forward Engineer Support Team-Advanced played a part by providing technical expertise.
